First class cuisine, spa facilities and a well-equipped gym are typical lodge features at South African luxury lodges.

South Africa’s wilderness reserves are absolutely world class.  The Greater Kruger National Park is definitely the country’s flagship game reserve; however the private reserves around Kruger in particular, offer an unprecedented opportunity to observe the “Big five” (Lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo).   South Africa is also unique in the range of game reserves that exist in malaria free zones.

Weather

Explorations Africa

South Africa as a whole receives the majority of its rainfall in the hot summer months from December to March. As the rain slackens off in the spring, it gives way to increasingly sunny skies through the winter months of June to August.  The daytime temperature in South Africa is generally very comfortable, however nights can definitely have a distinct chill with safari goers needing to be prepared to bundle up for early morning game drives.  Winter is peak season particularly for the safari areas. September through November are increasingly hot with the break in the dry cycle gradually commencing again anytime from October through November.

The exception to this is the southern Cape (including the city of Cape Town) which has a weather pattern distinct from the rest of the country.  Here the rainfall cycle is reversed with the rains occurring in the winter months, generally commencing in May and running through August. Weather can be extremely changeable and quite cool overall.  The summer months from November to March are the driest and generally considered the most beautiful time to visit this gorgeous area.
