Zambia Safaris

Zambia

Zambia is in the truest sense ‘old Africa’, hosting some of the most remote and unspoiled ecosystems on the subcontinent.  Zambia also offers an extremely wide range of wildlife safaris and adventure experiences from which to choose, with beautiful camps in classic safari style and exceptional guiding throughout the country.

Explorations Africa

Remote Wilderness

Tourist densities are more highly concentrated than in Botswana, however even limited competition for a prime wildlife sighting is a rare occurrence.  Big five game viewing – Leopard, lion, buffalo and elephant sightings are typically good to excellent and rhino can be seen near Victoria Falls, Livingstone.

The natural beauty of Zambia’s pristine wilderness areas is fantastic.    A major draw for the Zambian game safari experience is the superb level of training and skill required of their safari guides.  This is a huge component in the overall safari equation and really helps to make the Zambian safari experience superlative.

Seasonal Viewing

Zambia experiences the greatest seasonal variations in weather, so quite a few safari camps close completely during the ‘green’, (summer season).  With relatively marginal road infrastructure outside the parks, all transfers between reserves are by air; however limited road access is available between most camps in the same game reserves. International flights to Zambia are available through putting Zambian tourism on the map in recent years.

Zambia tends to come in on the middle of the cost scale although transportation costs tend to push up the total if travel between numerous safari areas is included in the itinerary.

Zambia Cultural Experiences

Culture

Explorations Africa

Zambia gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964 and although significantly impacted by Western culture, Zambia works hard to preserve its cultural heritage. A total of 73 indigenous languages are spoken in Zambia, reflecting its diverse cultural mix. Significant age-old customs continue to be actively celebrated with the most widely known being the Kuomboka ceremony where the Litunga, King of the Lozi people, is moved down the Zambezi River to escape the flooded Zambezi Plains at the end of the rainy season.

Seasons

Explorations Africa

Peak season for game viewing is May to September as it is dry and cool.  October and November is exceptional too but temperatures are in their high 30’s (Celsius).  For the select camps that are open year-round or in the rainy months of January – March, specials make travel really affordable and wildlife viewing is still fantastic.  The birthing season happens in December, January and this can be a really special time to visit.
