This exciting Exploration tour combining bush, beach and forest is a fantastic tour around the highlights of southern Malawi’s three most contrasting destinations, Liwonde National Park, Lake Malawi National Park and the Zomba Plateau.

The Malawi safari expertly combines wildlife, culture, history and scenery. About 800 kilometres will be covered in total while exploring the wilderness and mountainous beauty of the Zomba Plateau followed by viewing some of the wildlife species of Liwonde National Park on foot, by boat and vehicle. At Liwonde, hippopotamus sightings are a guaranteed daily occurrence!! The Zomba Plateau is the centre for the tobacco and dairy farms of the area and with their markets loud and colourful; literally anything can be bought or bartered for here! Activities in the area are focussed on the forested areas of the Plateau offering you varied options such as mountain biking, hiking to gorgeous waterfalls and lakes, bird watching, horse-riding, trout fishing and rock climbing.

Your Malawi safari ends with 3 days relaxing (with various activities for the more energetic!) at the sensational and crystal clear waters of the eco-friendly Mumbo Island in Lake Malawi National Park. Lake Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest fresh water lake in the southern hemisphere and home to nearly 1000 fish species of which many are endemic!

The drives on endless and exciting dirt roads between the various destinations are a revelation, providing ample opportunities to meet the friendliest people in Africa!

Day 1
Kumbali Country Lodge, Lilongwe, Malawi

After your flight arriving in Lilongwe, you have a short transfer to the Kumbali Country Lodge and have the opportunity to relax and freshen up.

Day 2-3
Ku Chawe Inn, Zomba Plateau

After breakfast you depart the lodge on a four to five-hour transfer, heading south along the western crest of the Great African Rift Valley floor.

The last few kilometres of the journey are a gradual incline through the natural forest to the volcanic slopes of the Zomba Plateau– an imposing mountain rising to an elevation of 1 800 metres (6 000 feet), this unique area is filled with stunning scenery and is rich in history. At Ku Chawe you chose from a diverse range of activities to enjoy.
Day 4-6
Mvuu Lodge, Liwonde National Park

Your journey continues by road to Malawi’s premier wildlife destination, Liwonde National Park, approximately two hours’ drive away.

Markets and monuments in Zomba town will be visited en route before travelling through rural Malawi to Mvuu Lodge. Mvuu meaning “hippo” in Chichewa, the local language, is the essence of the area, as colossal numbers of hippo inhabit the nearby Shire River. This beautiful area will be explored on game drives and walks.
Day 7-9
Mumbo Island Camp, Lake Malawi National Park

After breakfast you will be transferred to Mumbo Island, passing fishing villages on Lake Malombe and the historical Mangochi town.

The last 20 kilometres are on a wonderful dirt road that snakes through the steep mountain passes of the Cape Maclear Peninsula before arriving in Chembe Village. From Chembe village you have the choice of either kayaking to Mumbo Island or taking a 45-minute boat transfer. Ease into the slow rhythm of lake life on this private island and explore extraordinary flora and fauna in and out of the water.
Day 10
Road Transfer

You return to Lilongwe and bid farewell to your epic adventure.
